Why did you become a pharmacy technician?
I wanted a career in my local community, before coming to Chambers Apothecary I was working as an independent health screener and medical interpreter.
How long have you been practicing?
Ten years
What are you most proud of in your professional career?
I'm incredibly proud of my journey. Beginning as a clerk with no background in pharmacy, I drew upon my experience in medical offices, where I handled patient care and billing, and gained extensive knowledge of insurance during my time as a medical screener. Leveraging this foundation, I transitioned into various roles, from pharmacy technician to certified mastectomy fitter, certified durable medical technician, and now a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) with immunization expertise. I played a key role in developing our Durable Medical Equipment (DME) department, from product selection to billing, and workflow. Currently, I oversee this department and our compliance program. My responsibilities have recently expanded to include marketing, drawing on my familiarity with all facets of our pharmacies.
What is your most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician?
One of the most rewarding moments for me was assisting a gentleman in saving nearly -$1,500 annually on his medication costs. I connected him with a local agency for a free phone and helped him sign up for extra help and the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). By enrolling him in our synchronization program, we've been able to ensure he stays compliant with his medications, knowing that cost is no longer a barrier to his care.
Why did you become certified?
For me, it's all about establishing credibility. I strongly believe that earning credentials not only boosts professionalism but also instills a sense of ownership. Witnessing the positive effect it had on me, I've been able to inspire others in my organization to pursue certification. I took it upon myself to craft a proposal for our ownership team. I outlined how we can utilize the resources we already have to certify our technicians as part of an employee retention initiative. I'm excited about seeing this program come to life within the next six months.
What career advice do you have for others interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician?
Seize the opportunity! This career is perfect for individuals eager to assist patients without engaging in direct patient care, such as certified nursing assistants or licensed practical nurses . The earning potential is virtually limitless, provided you're ready to invest in your own development. I'm enrolled in courses for advanced technology and compound technician roles. In today's landscape, state pharmacy boards are increasingly acknowledging the significance of proficiently trained pharmacy technicians. I see our responsibilities broadening significantly in the years to come.
