Why did you become a pharmacy technician?

I had a career in restaurant management, but I wanted to explore opportunities in the healthcare field. While I enjoy working with people, I knew I didn’t want perform blood draws or engage in direct patient care. The role of a pharmacy technician seemed like a perfect fit.

How long have you been practicing?

Thirteen years.

What are you most proud of in your professional career?

I left a private health-care system after eight years to join the Veterans Health Administration. While it was a scary change; it has opened many doors for me as a pharmacy technician. I was promoted from an inpatient technician to a clinical technician in less than a year. I am proud of the fact that my hard work and efforts have been recognized. I have received so much support in my career at the VA.

What is your most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician?

Helping a veteran carry his medications from his outpatient clinic appointment to his car. We had a great conversation, and it was my pleasure to help him get to his car safely.

Why did you become certified?

My goal was to work in a hospital pharmacy. While certification was not required in my state at the time, it was difficult to get hired without it.

What career advice do you have for others interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician?

The profession is growing and the opportunities for pharmacy technicians are really starting to come through. Work hard, be trustworthy and show genuine interest in what you do, and the opportunities will eventually present themselves!
