Why I Do What I Do

I have always enjoyed teaching and leading others in the pharmacy technician profession. I discovered a passion teaching sterile preparations, so I have immersed myself in guiding, training, and developing technicians for IV compounding roles.

Latest Accomplishment

I would have to say getting more involved with ASHP and earning a spot on the Pharmacy Technician Education Council (PTEC) through PTCB has truly pushed me out of my comfort zone. This is something I wouldn't have pursued without the support of my amazing co-worker, Wendi Owens, and my supervisor, Chelsea Roberts. They frequently discussed the benefits of being involved with organizations and committees, which ignited a fire within me to start applying.

Most Memorable Experience as a Pharmacy Technician

I believe that occurred when my co-worker Brian and I volunteered to help with our sterile preparations training class. The students looked quite unsure and nervous. As soon as I introduced both of us, I was hit with many questions and concerns. I calmed and assured them that we would answer their questions, but we were going to go have some fun first in the lab. We worked on aseptic technique, learned about chemotherapy technique, and addressed their concerns and questions. The transformation in their expression made me feel like I made a difference that day. Smiles replaced apprehension, and confidence emanated from them. I remember saying "we did that".

Why I Became Certified

To be honest, I became certified because I had. I doubt I would have become certified if I wasn't required to, but I am glad I did because it opened so many doors for me.

My Passion Outside of Work or Hobbies

I enjoy hanging out with my dog Buu (Boo). She's is probably the best thing I have. She is 13-years old, so I try to soak up as much time as possible with her when I'm not at work. I also enjoy playing board games with my friends Robert and Caleb, as well as hanging out with my boyfriend, Brandon. On weekends, I love watching anime. Additionally, I am a huge Disney fan, and I enjoy collecting make up and Squishmellows.

Advice to up-and-coming technicians

Don't be afraid to step outside the box. I was afraid of IV compounding due to the intimidating nature of the testing books for the PTCB test. I convinced myself that I would never do it. However, growth often lies in embracing discomfort and tackling new challenges head-on. Don't give up and never be afraid to ask questions. Expand your knowledge and learn about things outside of what you do on a normal basis, especially if you aspire to take on a management role. A lot of people depend on you, including pharmacists, so it is good to be a "jack of all trades".
