Why I do what I do

I do what I do because we have an impactful job in healthcare. At the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, we take care of some of the sickest kids across the globe and it’s important they receive the best and safest care possible. I also do what I do to advocate for my technicians and ensure I’m working with them to build trust, set clear expectations, and remove any barriers that prevent them from doing their job effectively.

Latest Accomplishment

A few others and I in our leadership team submitted for the ASHP 2023 Best Practice Award and we won out of 60 submissions! We have worked hard to advocate for the advanced roles pharmacy technicians should have and giving them the proper training and development in leadership roles in order to be successful in managerial/supervisor roles. My Director of Operations, Ryan Craynon, and my Chief Director, Mark Thomas, had the great idea to start a Pharmacy Technician Leadership Residency designed and modified to fit the role of a technician in a leadership position and I was the first resident to complete the program back in 2020.

Most Memorable Experience as a Pharmacy Technician

My most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician would have to be presenting a podium presentation at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting 2022 in Las Vegas around pharmacy technician advancement. Ryan Craynon and I were given the opportunity to share our work on our Pharmacy Technician Leadership Residency and the importance it has had on our department and retention in our employees.

Why I Became Certified

I became certified back in 2015 while working in my Walgreens retail job because my manager advocated that I take the national exam. Once I passed, she was able to advocate for my raise and promotion to Senior Certified Pharmacy Technician.

My Passion Outside of Work or Hobbies

I love spending time with my friends, family, and pup. I enjoy live music and spending time outdoors. I enjoy creative spaces like entry level pottery and painting classes.

Advice to Up-and-Coming Technicians

My advice to any up-and-coming technicians is to always ask questions and advocate for your learning space. You always want to speak up when you feel something is not safe or you are unsure of what to do. Healthcare is an ever-changing learning environment and those that are involved must feel comfortable asking questions and speaking up.
