Why did you become a pharmacy technician?
Originally, I owned my own business. Once my mother got cancer, she started seeing a customer of mine who was a pharmacist and naturopath. I began working part time for her to have more time with my mother during her care. I found I enjoyed what I was doing so much that I closed my business and started working full time in community pharmacy.
How long have you been practicing?
I began as a pharmacy technician in 2021.
What are you most proud of in your professional career?
The impact I am able to have on patients and the opportunities to help other technicians grow.
What is your most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician?
During the height of the pandemic, we had a patient who lived over an hour away and needed a nebulizer machine. They were so sick and unable to get out to come to us. With my children in the back of my car, I personally drove an hour to deliver it. It's opportunities to provide care like that I most enjoy.
Why did you become certified?
I wanted to prove to myself that I knew the information and I could do it.
What career advice do you have for others interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician?
You have to find the bright spots in your day. There aren't problem patients — there are patients with problems and it is our job to solve them. Find joy in helping the mom with special needs kids who is ready for a battle at every turn. Find peace in the long phone calls with elderly patients who may not have anyone else. Find love in the moments when hurt people are hurting people. Find empathy rather than judgement when patients are taking medication to help them with their weight, addictions, and mental health. If you can do all that, you'll go farther than anyone else.
