Why did you become a pharmacy technician?
I found a job as a pharmacy technician after taking a summer pharmacology class in college. I fell in love with learning how drugs work in the body and later realized I enjoyed the fast-paced environment of the pharmacy, along with having the chance to help others and the social aspect of meeting new people and becoming someone they could rely on.
How long have you been practicing?
I've been a pharmacy technician since 2002.
What are you most proud of in your professional career?
I'm proud of the growth that I've achieved over the years. After moving into the inpatient setting, I took every opportunity to train in new areas (e.g., compounding, OR satellite, controlled-substance auditing, scheduling, special projects, etc.) before becoming the hospital's first pharmacy operations manager, as a technician rather than a pharmacist.
What is your most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician?
A single experience doesn't come to mind, but I feel the most pride when I identify an issue with someone's medication regimen and tell them when they need to bring in a pharmacist to clarify something or ask more questions.
Why did you become certified?
For me, it was the obvious next step in my journey of professional growth, and it was more of an intrinsic decision than anything. I'm always looking for the next thing I can do, learn, or be a part of to keep the momentum of personal and professional development going.
What career advice do you have for others interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician?
Never stop learning and push yourself into taking risks. It may be uncomfortable, but without risk, there's little growth.
