Advocacy for Pharmacy Technicians
Advocacy related to pharmacy technicians is the dedicated effort to champion the rights, interests, and professional development of pharmacy technicians. It involves actively working to influence decisions, policies, and public perception to enhance the role and well-being of pharmacy technicians.
- Regulatory Advocacy: Advocates seek to influence regulatory bodies and policymakers to establish or modify regulations and licensure requirements that govern the profession. This may include advocating for standardized training and certification.
- Scope of Practice Advocacy: Advocates work to define and expand the scope of practice for pharmacy technicians. This involves advocating for the ability to take on responsibilities such as providing immunizations or point-of-care testing.
- Professional Development Advocacy: Advocates aim to promote opportunities for continuous education, training, and career advancement for pharmacy technicians. This can include advocacy for access to relevant training programs and opportunities for specialization.

- Patient Advocacy: Advocates promote the importance of their role in patient care. This includes advocating for the recognition of pharmacy technicians as essential members of the healthcare team.
Advocacy can be conducted by individual technicians, professional organizations, or groups. The goal of advocacy is to improve pharmacy technician’s professional standing, ensure their contributions to patient care are acknowledged, and create opportunities for career growth and development within the field.
Being an Advocate for Technicians
I am a voice of advocacy for pharmacy technician advancement by being appointed to the ASHP Council of Pharmacy Practice for two years, taking part in work groups for creating Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certificate programs and item writing, and also being president of the North Dakota Association of Pharmacy Technicians. I am proud to have found a voice to push for the advancement of pharmacy technicians.
