What is a State Spotlight?
State Spotlights are a resource designed to highlight the distinct roles, responsibilities, and regulatory requirements for pharmacy technicians across each U.S. state. It serves as a valuable guide for understanding how technician duties vary by location, including differences in certification standards, scope of practice, training expectations, and licensure procedures.Why is registration/licensure important?
There are two main reasons why registration/licensure is important.
- Safety: Registration/licensure requires verification of knowledge and integrity through satisfaction of educational requirements and background checks. These processes ensure that the professionals providing care are capable and reliable.
- Legitimizes career: Registration/licensing recognizes the work of professionals who have an impact on public health and safety.
Do all states require registration/licensure and have the same requirements?

Each individual state sets their own requirements for registration/licensure. Registered/licensed pharmacy technicians are governed by the state board of pharmacy.Do pharmacy technicians need a background check?

- ASHP Program Directory: Use the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) directory to find accredited programs nationwide.
- PTCB Recognized Program Directory: Visit the PTCB website to search for recognized education/training programs in your state or filter for online/distance learning.
State Board of Pharmacy
Check your state board of pharmacy website to confirm which programs meet your state’s requirements. Each state has unique rules for pharmacy technician education, training, and licensing.
Online Research
A simple online search will return many pharmacy technician programs. Review the details of each program to decide the best program for you. Each program will differ in their curriculum, externship opportunities, class schedules, delivery format (online, in-person, or hybrid), financial aid options (grants, scholarships, and loans), and career support (job placement services or partnerships with pharmacies/hospitals).
Do I need to pass an exam to work as a pharmacy technician?
Requirements vary by state. Passing a national certification exam is a common state requirement. See the individual State Spotlights for more information.
What is the difference between registration, licensure, and certification?
Registration, licensure, and certification represent different levels of validation for a pharmacy technicians' ability to practice. Each state board of pharmacy determines which requirements apply within its jurisdiction. There are no national standards governing registration, licensure, or certification for pharmacy technicians. Refer to the Glossary for definitions of these specific terms.
Who governs national certifications?
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) administers the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)
- National Healthcareer Association (NHA) administers the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT)
What’s the difference between getting certified through PTCB vs. NHA?
The key differences between PTCB and NHA certifications for pharmacy technicians lie in their eligibility requirements, exam content, and overall recognition within the industry. Acceptance of the PTCE and ExCPT may vary by state. See the individual State Spotlights for more information.
Do continuing education (CE) requirements apply to all pharmacy technicians?
Requirements vary by state. Pharmacy technicians who are nationally certified must complete continuing education to maintain their certification. Individual states may have additional educational requirements.
Can I transfer my pharmacy technician registration or license if I move to another state?
No. Registration/licensure does not transfer between states. If you move to another state, you must meet that state’s specific requirements.
