Why did you become a pharmacy technician?

I became a pharmacy technician because I was drawn to healthcare and wanted a role that combined patient care with operational efficiency. Pharmacy appealed to me because it required both technical knowledge and strong attention to detail, ensuring patients received accurate and timely medications. Cancer affected family members and friends throughout my life, and seeing their journey impacted me. Working in oncology was a goal of mine, and it's rewarding to give back to the community that helped and supported my friends and family during their fight. Over time, as I grew in my career, I developed a passion for mentoring others in the field, helping new technicians grow, and optimizing pharmacy operations for better efficiency and patient outcomes. My experience has allowed me to oversee teams, implement improvements, and support both staff and patients effectively.

How long have you been practicing?

I have been in the pharmacy field for 14 years, overseeing pharmacy technicians and working in various capacities to improve operational efficiency, mentor staff, and enhance patient care. My experience spans leadership, strategy, and workforce development within pharmacy operations.

What are you most proud of in your professional career?

I am proud of my impact on patient care and leadership development in pharmacy operations. Ensuring that patients — especially those navigating the difficult cancer journey — receive safe, accurate, and timely treatment has been incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that my efforts contribute to their well-being during such a critical time is a responsibility I take seriously. Mentoring and developing pharmacy technicians has also been a key highlight of my career. I’ve helped build strong, knowledgeable teams that excel in technical skills and embrace compassionate patient care. Seeing mentees grow into confident professionals and future leaders is a testament to the importance of investing in people. Balancing operational strategy with patient-centered care has shaped my leadership style, reinforcing the need for efficiency, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

What is your most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician?

A new pharmacy technician with no sterile compounding experience confided in me about feeling overwhelmed by the fast-paced environment of community oncology. Recognizing her passion, potential, adaptability, and attention to detail, I took the time to guide her through processes and boost her confidence while being the support in her corner. Over time, she became a strong technician and was later promoted to pharmacy trainer. Watching her growth and success reminded me of the power of mentorship and how investing in others strengthens the profession.

Why did you become certified?

I became certified as a pharmacy technician to enhance my knowledge, credibility, and ability to provide high-quality patient care. I realized that certifications demonstrated my commitment to my profession and ensured I had the expertise to handle pharmacy processes, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements. Additionally, the certifications I've pursued have opened doors for career growth, allowing me to take on leadership roles, mentor others, and contribute to operational improvements. My certifications have been instrumental in advancing my ability to support patients and pharmacy teams effectively.
