Why did you become a pharmacy technician?
I was in college and my sister-in-law, who is a pharmacist, was looking for someone to train to prepare home intravenous (IV) therapy. She asked me and I said, "Why not?"
How long have you been practicing?
I've been practicing in this field for almost 25 years.
What are you most proud of in your professional career?
In 2023, I was named Pharmacy Technician of the Year by the Maryland Pharmacist's Association. That same year, I earned my advanced certification. In 2024, I was appointed as a director on the MPhA Foundation board of directors. I was also honored to give a presentation at the National Pharmacy Purchasing Association's annual conference and was awarded runner-up Buyer of the Year!
What is your most memorable experience as a pharmacy technician?
I'd have to say the most memorable experience was giving a presentation at the National Pharmacy Purchasing Association conference last summer. Getting up in front of hundreds of people to speak for an hour was something I was sure I'd never be able to do, but I actually enjoyed it and I'm presenting again this summer!
Why did you become certified?
I became certified as a condition of my employment when I began working in hospital pharmacy. Once I was free to discover all the credentials out there, the sky was the limit. I now have five PTCB certificates, one NPTA certificate, and one BPTS certificate.
What career advice do you have for others interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician?
There are so many opportunities for pharmacy technicians! Don't be afraid to invest in advanced education and skills. You can do it!
